Building a Literacy Foundation at Home (best for ages 2-5)

You might think of learning to read as an important childhood milestone that happens early in Elementary school. You may even remember learning to read yourself, sounding out short words on the back of cereal boxes or suddenly noticing words springing out at you from billboards from the backseat of your parent’s car.

These are thrilling moments in a child’s literacy journey, but there are so many other moments that lead up to them. And in truth, the acquisition of literacy - the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that lets us communicate effectively and make sense of the world - is a life long process that begins as soon as a baby is born.

Learning to read begins with learning to speak, to play with sounds, babbles and then words. To create rhymes and clap rhythms, to sing melodies, draw marks, lines and shapes. Learning to read and write is based in exploration and play, and is something young children are constantly engaged in.

In this workshop, you will learn how so much of your child’s exploration and play is helping her build a strong literacy foundation.

  • You will learn how to enhance this exploration to help deepen your children literacy foundation.

  • You will learn songs and games, ways of reading books, and ways of engaging with art that will help your children build a deeper literacy awareness in a way that is playful and attuned to your child’s unique interests and development.

Workshop attendance is $35 per person and includes:

  • Hour-long live session (which includes Q & A)

  • Follow-up summary email with links to pertinent materials and guides
