Virtual Parent Workshops
Building a Literacy Foundation at Home (best for ages 2-5)
You might think of learning to read as an important childhood milestone that happens early in Elementary school. You may even remember learning to read yourself, sounding out short words on the back of cereal boxes or suddenly noticing words springing out at you from billboards from the backseat of your parent’s car.
These are thrilling moments in a child’s literacy journey, but there are so many other moments that lead up to them. And in truth, the acquisition of literacy - the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that lets us communicate effectively and make sense of the world - is a life long process that begins as soon as a baby is born.
Learning to read begins with learning to speak, to play with sounds, babbles and then words. To create rhymes and clap rhythms, to sing melodies, draw marks, lines and shapes. Learning to read and write is based in exploration and play, and is something young children are constantly engaged in.
In this workshop, you will learn how so much of your child’s exploration and play is helping her build a strong literacy foundation.
You will learn how to enhance this exploration to help deepen your children literacy foundation.
You will learn songs and games, ways of reading books, and ways of engaging with art that will help your children build a deeper literacy awareness in a way that is playful and attuned to your child’s unique interests and development.
Workshop attendance is $35 per person and includes:

Independence in the Home: Setting up Routines for Daily Life (best for ages 2 - 5)
Young children are capable of so much, we just have to let them show us all that they can do.
Children love to be helpful, to feel like they are participating in real work that means something to the people they love most, their parents and siblings. And giving them opportunities to participate in the routines of their home-life, from cooking to cleaning to dressing themselves in the morning and packing their own lunches, makes them feel big and important and proud of themselves, empowered to take on new challenges.
In this workshop you will learn why it is so important for children to do things for themselves - from a very young age and how to get started.
You will learn the power of independence for young children and the confidence and sense of control and stability it can bring to their experiences at home
You will learn how to set up daily systems, tools, and expectations in your house that will create a culture of shared communal responsibility in your family that will encourage your child to be independent in things like getting dressed and brushing teeth, preparing food of himself and others, and participating in other family/house-hold tasks
